Due to its seating capacity and ability to stable over 2000 horses, Santa Anita Park was chosen to host most of the equestrian events at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, even the final events, which traditionally have been relocated to the main stadium, were held here. The speed and endurance portions of the events were held at Fairbanks Ranch Country Club, a golf course near San Diego. Santa Anita Park was opened in 1934 and has the distinction of being the first authorized horse racetrack in California.
The jumping events were dominated by the United States and the dressage events by West Germany in a field that was without the Soviet Bloc countries due to the boycott.
