New York City has three separate subway lines, the Inter-borough Rapid Transit (IRT) built in 1904, the Brooklyn Manhattan Transit (BMT) built in 1923, and the Independent Line (IND) built in the 1932. Eventually all three lines were merged into a single subway system but each has it's distinctive characteristics. Substation #13 was built for the IRT line in 1904.

Substations are used by the system to house the electrical transformers used to power the system. Since the IRT line was built in 1904 the substations feature Beaux Arts architecture which was in style in the early 20th century.

Substation #13 is three bays wide and four stories high. The masonry lower level has two large entrance bays separated to a rectangular window. The upper levels are faced with brick. The second and third levels have an ornate two story windows framed by masonry blocks and with ornate medallions in the header. The center bay two vertically oriented windows. The upper level has five windows framed by stone and with keystone headers. The flat roof has a decorative stonework along the roof-line with six stone scroll projecting down into the spaces on the sides of the windows.

Substation #13 was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. (visit link)
