Casher lock is the second lock on the Chichester canal leaving Chichester harbour. It was abandoned in 1906 after the last cargo transited the canal. Only the sea lock (Salterns lock) remains in use further down where the canal left the harbour.

The Chichester canal ran from the sea level of Chichester harbour for 12 miles to Ford on the River Arun. It was designed by the well known canal engineer, John Rennie, who died in 1822, the year the canal opened.

It was designed as part of the inland link between London and Chichester/Portsmouth. Sadly the route was never really profitable as the sea route became the cheaper alternative.

Waterway Name: Chichester Canal

Connected Points:
The Chichester Canal linked Ford on the River Arun to Salterns in Chichester harbour. The River Arun led to the Wey & Arun Canal and then the River Wey and then the River Thames forming "London's Lost Route To The Sea" - an absolutely fascinating if you can find a copy.
