SAILOR’S HOME
Architect: W.T. Whiteway
This apartment block was built in 1912. It was an early sign of the neighbourhood’s transition from modest houses, affected by expansion of the nearby port. Until 1915 it was under the name Dollie Darlington, when this section of Alexander was known as the city’s “red light district,” after public pressure forced it to move eastward from Chinatown. By 1918 the building was known as the Sailor’s House, a place of refuge for sailors visiting the port. The exterior restoration was completed in 2012, part of the conversion to meet key housing needs of the local area. It was given the name “Imouto,” Japanese for “little sister,” expressing the goals of Atria Women’s Resource Society to provide housing for young women, as well as its relationship with the Japanese Language School and Hall and the wider historic Powell Street area.
