Big Basin is a natural sinkhole about a mile in diameter and about a hundred and twenty five feet deep. Although it may appear to be a valley, there is higher ground all around. To the east is Little Basin and St. Jacob's Well, another sinkhole. There are several smaller sinkholes in this region as well. The Big Basin sinkhole is fairly recent in geological terms, forming a few thousand years ago when underground deposits of salt and gypsum dissolved and the ground above collapsed. The historical marker here gives a description of the Big Basin. A web site that describes both the Big Basin and Little Basin is
here.
Note: if you are moving on to Little Basin, you will need a high-clearance vehicle or 4x4, or prepare for a hike of a few miles.
