The builder of this house, Axel Spoof, lived at Vartiovuorenkatu 1 with his family from the time the house was completed until 1901. The first floor housed the kitchen and four other rooms surrounding the hall. The main entrance of the house was made modest and it led directly to the street. A janitor walked in from the courtyard. The stairs between the floors of the house were located in the corner facing the street. The facade of the Jugend house was designed by Alex Nyström and on it you can find Asklepios' rods, which remind you of Axel Spoof's profession.
On the front side of the house there is a commemorative plaque that mentions the people who lived in the house. One of them was the well-known writer Volter Kilpi.
Axel Reinhold Spoof (March 3, 1845 Turku – May 16, 1930 Turku) was a Finnish doctor and member of parliament.
