The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts was the result of one woman’s vision for a state-of-the-art performance venue for Kansas City. That woman was Muriel McBrien Kauffman, civic leader, philanthropist and wife of Ewing Kauffman, the original owner of the Kansas City Royals baseball team. Though Muriel Kauffman died before her vision could be realized, her daughter, Julia Irene Kauffman saw the project through to completion.

Designed by world renowned architect Moshe Safdie, the Kaufman Center consists of two half shell structures enclosing two distinct venues connected by a large glass enclosed atrium. The larger venue, named the Muriel Kauffman Theatre was designed for dance and stage performances and is home to both the Kansas City Ballet and the Lyric Opera of Kansas City. The smaller venue, named the Helzberg Hall, is meant for orchestral performances and is home to the Kansas City Symphony. Both venues were named for major donors to the project.

The Kauffman Center took five years to build. It opened to great fanfare in September of 2011. Among the several performers was noted tenor Plácido Domingo, making his Kansas City debut. Also performing for the opening was violin virtuoso Itzhak Perlman.
