I have fond memories of this sign when coming home as child late a night when my parents would visit friends in Surrey. The galloping horse of the Turf Motel was a highlight of the hour-long drive.
When the Pattullo Bridge opened in the mid-1930s it provided a good highway link from Vancouver to Seattle. The Province of BC numbered it 99 as an extension of US Highway 99 that ran up the West Coast from California through Oregon and Washington.
Here in the Bridgeview neighourhood this small hotel opened to serve people on the long drive into Vancouver. Essentially it became a roadside bar and today it continues that role. But the Turf features two galloping horses with legs shifting poistions every few seconds. It is always worth a moments pause to see the horses run.
