Bing Crosby, born Harry Lillis Crosby Jr. in Tacoma, Washington, is widely considered to be the first great multimedia superstar. Throughout the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s, he was a top recording artist, a major box office attraction and a highly rated radio personality. He recorded about 1600 songs and for over fifty years, his recording of ‘White Christmas’ was the top selling single of all time. The academy award winning actor appeared in over 70 films and he is a member of the Radio Hall of Fame. Correspondingly, he has three stars on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame: one for recording, one for films and one for radio.

Crosby got his nickname as a little boy when a neighbor started calling him ‘Bingo’ after a popular comic strip. As is often the case, others started calling him ‘Bingo’ and eventually the name, shortened to ‘Bing,’ stuck. Bing’s “crooning” style of singing, perfect for the age of microphones, influenced many subsequent entertainers such as Dean Martin, Perry Como and Frank Sinatra.

And Bing was a big-time sports enthusiast. He became very involved with thoroughbred horse racing, and at one time was co-owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team. He was also an avid golfer attaining a two handicap at one point. In fact, he died when he suffered a massive heart attack walking back to the clubhouse after shooting an 85 on a golf course in Spain.
