MacDonald is depicted wearing a below the knee length double breasted overcoat, a waistcoat, high collar shirt, bow tie, trousers and shoes. He is standing with his right foot forward. He is holding the labels of his overcoat with both hands.

John Alexander Macdonald was born in Glasgow, Scotland on January 10, 1815. His family immigrated to Kingston in Upper Canada in 1820. He traveled to Toronto (then York) and passed an examination set by The Law Society of Upper Canada to become a lawyer.
Macdonald was the leading figure in the passage of the British North America Act, 1867 and the establishment of Canada as a nation on July 1, 1867. He was the first prime minister of the new nation, and served as: Co-Premier of Canada from 1864 to 1867, Member of the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to June 6, 1891, Leader of the Conservative Party from July 1, 1867 – June 6, 1891, 1st Prime Minister of Canada from October 17, 1878 – June 6, 1891.
