Perth & Kinross was formed as a county in 1996 by combining the counties of Perthshire and Kinross-shire in central Scotland. It covers a large area with the Highland Boundary Fault dividing the lowlands to the south and east from the highlands to the north and west.
The highest point is the summit of Ben Lawers, a 3,983 foot, 1,214 metres high mountain which lies in the western part of the county above the north side of Loch Tay. The mountain gives its name to a range of seven mountains in the area, of which it is at the centre.
It is the 10th highest mountain in the UK, and in the past there have been repeated attempts to push the mountain over the 4,000 foot mark with sizeable cairns, all of which failed. The summit is currently marked with a smaller but sturdier cairn, and an Ordnance Survey trig pillar which is badly eroded at its base.
Despite its height, the mountain is easily climbed from a high starting point at a car park to the south on the road that climbs through the mountains between Loch Tay and Glen Lyon. The mountain range is a national nature reserve and is owned by the National Trust for Scotland who have constructed a good path to the summit.
