In de 17de eeuw was Kockengen behoorlijk welvarend door de goede waterverbindingen met Amsterdam en Utrecht. Van de huizen uit die tijd zijn alleen de twee huizen met trapgevels op de hoek Voorstraat-Nieuwstraat nog over. Vrijwel het hele dorp, op deze huizen en de kerk na, is in het rampjaar 1672 platgebrand. In dat jaar vielen Franse troepen de Republiek binnen. Zij werden tegengehouden door de watervlakte van de Oude Hollandse Waterlinie, die van Schoonhoven over Oudewater en Woerden naar Nieuwersluis liep.
