Pollinator Ribbon Insect Hotel is one of several insect hotels installed along the Greenway created when the elevated highway in Boston was moved underground, a project commonly known as the "Big Dig". This insect hotel has a tall narrow design with six compartments that can attract a variety of insect to a pollinator garden.
A sign next to the insect hotel is inscribed:
POLLINATOR GARDEN
ON THE GREENWAY
This garden is designed to draw pollinators such as hummingbirds,
bees, and moths through its meandering pathways. Providing
food and habitat for pollinators is a simple way to improve the health of any landscape, as these insects and animals help to fertilize the flowers, allowing fruits and seeds to form, which in turn provide food for wildlife. In this garden you will find native perennials such as h Butterfly Weed (Asciepias tuberosa), Cardinal Flower (Lobella cardinalis), shade tolerant White Wood Aster (Eurybia divaricata) and Coral Bells (Heuchera villosa) interplanted with Northeast native shrubs Shadbush (Amelanchier), Chokecherry (Aronia) and more.
