Missen is located in the Allgauer Alps, in which most of the population is Roman Catholic, followed by Lutherans and Calvinists. Every town with a population greater than 1000 has a Roman Catholic Church, and the parish church located in Missen is St. Martin.

The town on Missen was first mentioned in 1275. The church and its' west tower was built in the 15th century. In 1560, the tower spire was put on. In the 18th century the windows were enlarged and the church was slightly remodeled.

From 1819 and some years after, a new vaulted ceiling and a second gallery were constructed, with the church carpenter Petrich significantly involved.

A sacrament niche from around 1500 and two remains of frescoes from this period bear witness to the once artistically designed parish church. The baptismal font dates from the late 15th century. South of the church is a 16th century Mount of Olives with figures from around 1800.

There is some interesting "people" history of this Church. Traditionally, women sit on the right-hand side, but the men have to sit on the left (seen from the entrance). During the Thirty Years' War (mid 1600's) the men were on duty at arms. The women of the village, on the other hand, defended Missen against the approaching Swedes. As a visible thank you for this, they were granted the privilege of being allowed to sit on the "men's side" in the future.
