On August 15, 1967 floodwaters in the Chena River overtopped its banks by over 5 feet, sending floodwaters gushing throughout Fairbanks.

In 2017, the city of Fairbanks and government agency partners installed over two dozen high level markers throughout downtown and around the city marking the water level at each location. The idea is for the visitor to be able to see the exact level at each location.

A walking tour of the flood markers was also created. That pamphlet can be seen here: (visit link)

This particular high level mark (#11 on the walking tour map) is located along Cushman Street at the left side of Fairbanks City HallThe level shown is about 6 inches.

The flood marker reads as follows:

"[top sign]
Chena River flood
August 15, 1967

Floodwaters from the Chena River rose to the level shown. If the flood occurred today, water levels would be lower as a result of the Chena River Lakes Flood Control Project, which includes the Moose Creek Dam and Tanana River Levee.

In partnership with
City of Fairbanks, US Geological Survey, 50th Anniversary of Fairbanks Commission, US Army Corps of Engineers, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency

A picture showing the level along with any markers telling of what had occurred can be used. Better yet would be a picture of you or someone standing next to the high level mark, that would show if you would have been just wading or completely submersed.
