The Cemetery - General Information
Originally 80 acres when acquired in 1867, 13 acres at the corner of Glenstone Avenue and Seminole Street east of Center Drive were transferred shortly after to establish the National Cemetery. Two acres were also transferred from the northwest corner to the Temple of Israel to create the current Jewish Cemetery.
In the 1980’s, five acres along Seminole Street were transferred to expand the National Cemetery west of Center Drive.
At its present 60 acres, Hazelwood Cemetery remains one of the largest city-operated cemeteries in the State with over 44,000 grave spaces.
Three complete cleanups of the grounds are scheduled for the 2nd week of March, June, and September.

The Cemetery - Sesquicentennial Celebration Information
Oct. 14, 2017 Springfield commemorated the sesquicentennial anniversary of Hazelwood Cemetery. 150 years of history and service to the community were memorialized on its grounds.
At the time Hazelwood was officially dedicated, on October 26, 1867, the cemetery was a long horse and buggy ride miles outside Springfield's city limits. Today, the city has grown up around it. With 60 developed acres and over 44,000 grave spaces, Hazelwood is one of the largest municipally-operated cemeteries in Missouri.
Hazelwood honors Springfield founder John Pollk Campbell, Route 66 visionary John T. Woodruff and is the final resting place of many other familiar names in our community.
The celebration included a Sesquicentennial Commemoration Ceremony with Congressional and City Proclamations, a Revolutionary War Wreath-Laying by the Sons of the American Revolution, a Guided History Walk lead by the Springfield-Greene County Library, and various information booths.
