Cycling route through a historic area. It is here the Battle of Waterloo was fought on Sunday, 18 June 1815. It was Napoleon's last battle.
The first thing you see is a huge artificial hill, called The Lion's Mound (French: Butte du Lion). It commemorates the spot on the battlefield where a musket ball hit the shoulder of William II of Holland and knocked him from his horse during the battle. It is possible to go up the hill via a long staircase and at the top is a large memorial representing a lion.
In the area there are several memorials, museums and restaurants. And of course many tourists who you have to be aware of if you ride a bike.
