Imberg is a small town near the larger city of Sonthofen in southern Bavaria, within the Allgäu Alps. Crosses are all over the mountaintops in southern Germany, as the region is primarily Roman Catholic. They often commemorate a group of people or are signs of worship among the local population.

This cross is on the way from Imberg to the Imberger Horn, a local prominent mountain. There is a stamped (by hand) metal placard denoting for whom this cross is memorializing.

German:

"1978 S. G. Imberg
zum Gedenken an unsere Kameraden"

My English Translation:

1978 S.G Imberg
In memory of our comrades

The logo of S. G. Imberg is a pair of skis and a mountain climbing pickaxe. My personal opinion is that is commemorates the people who have died in these beautiful mountains, be it from skiing or mountain climbing. While death may not have occurred while adventuring, but it more likely a memorial to people who enjoyed adventuring.
