St. James Episcopal Church was organized in Great Barrington in 1760 and the parish was established in 1762. The present St. James Episcopal Church is their third building. It was designed by architects W.T. Anicka, James McAndrew Vance, and J. Washburn and constructed in the Gothic Revival style 1857.

The stone block building is 50' wide and 90' long. The tower that projects from the main block is 16' square and 80' high. A recessed entrance is framed by a Gothic arch at the base of the tower. Above the entrance is a triple set Gothic style windows, the middle window being the taller of the three. The next tier is a clock tower with a clock face on the front and sides. Above the clocks is a belfry with Gothic style louvered windows. The top of the tower has pinnacle at all four corners.

The front of the main block has a single Gothic style window on each side of the tower. The sides of the building are five bays wide. The north side has Gothic style windows on each bay. The south side has four such windows and the half timbered Parish House attached to the the fifth bay.

In 2008, pre-existing structural problems resulted in the partial collapse of the rear chancel wall. Services were moved to Crissey Farm. The building was saved from demolition by the efforts the newly founded organization Partners for Sacred Places that searched for grant opportunities to turn the church into a Cultural Center and Home for the Arts known as St. James Place.
