"One of the most relevant historical events related to the São Gonçalo bridge dates back to 1809, during the Napoleonic wars, having gone down in history under the name of the "Amarante Bridge Defense".
The Portuguese troops under the command of General Silveira managed to immobilize General Soult's troops along the banks of the Tâmega, thus preventing the French troops from communicating with their compatriots who were in Spain, while the Portuguese army, along with the British, reorganized.
Although over time the French troops managed to pass by defeating the Portuguese militia that was next to the São Gonçalo bridge, the resistance they encountered there was decisive for the final victory of the Anglo-Lusitanian allied armies."
