The rugged terrain and natural protection afforded the Indians, made this one of the last parts of Texas to be settled. The last Indian attack in the area was in 1881.

The town was know as Bugscuffle until 1886 when it applied for a post office. The first postmaster had the much more dignified name of L. B. Vanderpool, and decided for the sake of future generations to rename the town after himself. The current census tells us approx. 20 people live in Vanderpool.

The cemetery is north of town. It has a nice arched entrance and it is fenced.
