In 1913 kreeg ingenieursbureau Van Hasselt en de Koning de opdracht een plan te maken dat voorzag in de bouw van twee nieuwe stoomgemalen, één in Wapenveld en één bij polder Nijbroek, aan de Bandijk in Terwolde. Het stoomgemaal in Wapenveld, gemaal Pouwel Bakhuis, werd in 1920 voltooid en is het laatste gemaal aangedreven door stoom dat nieuw gebouwd is in Nederland. Het stoomgemaal aan de Bandijk in Terwolde werd twee jaar eerder in gebruik genomen en is eveneens een van de weinige resterende 20e-eeuwse gemalen uit de eindperiode van de bemaling met stoomkracht.

Bij de bouw van het stoomgemaal in Terwolde werd ook een nieuw toevoerkanaal gegraven van ruim 6 kilometer, waarmee het water uit het zuidelijke deel van de polder bij Terwolde op de IJssel geloosd kon worden én water vanuit de IJssel polder Nijbroek ingelaten kon worden.

In de loop der tijd bleek de capaciteit van het stoomgemaal niet groot genoeg meer te zijn. Het Technisch Bureau van de Unie van Waterschapsbonden kreeg opdracht een nieuw gemaal te ontwerpen. Het nieuwe elektrische gemaal, gebouwd in 1951, werd ten zuiden van het stoomgemaal gebouwd. Waar de niet meer functionele stoomgemalen veelal gesloopt werden, werd aan de Bandijk gekozen voor het bijbouwen van een nieuw gemaal, waardoor het huidige unieke gemaalensemble ontstond. Het voormalige stoomgemaal werd verbouwd tot dienstwoning voor ‘de machinist’ die het gemaal bediende.

Het nieuwe gemaal stond aanvankelijk bekend als het gemaal ’t Blokhuis, maar werd later vernoemd naar de dijkgraaf baron A.C. van der Feltz, die zich hard had gemaakt voor de elektrische bemaling van de polder. Het elektrische gemaal is van hoge architectuurhistorische waarde als goed bewaard gebleven voorbeeld van een gemaal in de Delftse school-bouwstijl.

Het gemaalcomplex Baron van der Feltz is ruimtelijk sterk verbonden met de IJssel, de dijk en het achterliggende watersysteem met ook polder Nijbroek. Het vormt de schakel tussen rivier en polderlandschap; gezamenlijk tonen gemaal en polder zowel de middeleeuwse start als de latere ontwikkelingen in waterbeheer. Diverse tijdlagen zijn zichtbaar in het (water)landschap en de objecten en bouwwerken langs het water; ze tonen onze omgang met water, ontwikkelingen in landschap en klimaat en opvattingen over waterbeheer door de tijd.

In 1913, the engineering firm Van Hasselt en de Koning was commissioned to draw up a plan that provided for the construction of two new steam pumping stations, one in Wapenveld and one near the Nijbroek polder, on the Bandijk in Terwolde. The steam pumping station in Wapenveld, Pouwel Bakhuis pumping station, was completed in 1920 and is the last steam-powered pumping station newly built in the Netherlands. The steam pumping station on the Bandijk in Terwolde was put into use two years earlier and is also one of the few remaining 20th-century pumping stations from the end of the steam-powered dewatering period.

During the construction of the steam pumping station in Terwolde, a new supply channel of more than 6 kilometers was dug, with which the water from the southern part of the polder at Terwolde could be discharged into the IJssel and water could be let in from the IJssel polder in Nijbroek.

In the course of time, the capacity of the steam pumping station proved to be insufficient. The Technical Bureau of the Union of Water Boards was commissioned to design a new pumping station. The new electric pumping station, built in 1951, was built south of the steam pumping station. Where the no longer functional steam pumping stations were often demolished, the decision was made to build a new pumping station at the Bandijk, creating the current unique pumping station ensemble. The former steam pumping station was converted into an official residence for 'the engineer' who operated the pumping station.

The new pumping station was initially known as the ’t Blokhuis pumping station, but was later named after the dyke baron A.C. van der Feltz, who had championed the electrical dewatering of the polder. The electric pumping station is of high architectural-historical value as a well-preserved example of a pumping station in the Delft school architectural style.

The Baron van der Feltz pumping station complex is spatially strongly connected to the IJssel, the dike and the underlying water system, including the Nijbroek polder. It forms the link between river and polder landscape; together, the pumping station and polder show both the medieval start and the later developments in water management. Various time layers are visible in the (water) landscape and the objects and structures along the water; they show how we deal with water, developments in the landscape and climate and views on water management over time.
