The Harris Woolen Mill was established in 1867. The mill operated from then until the early 1880's, when fire destroyed the original wooden structure. The present stone construction was completed in 1883.

The mill operated at full capacity until the end of the First World War, when increased competition, rising wages, and cheaper national brands reduced the requirement. The mill operated sporadically until 1925, then ceased operations.

However, the mill again reopened in 1930. Sadly, this venture failed and the mill closed forever in 1933.

In the following years, the area was turned into a park area, However, an arson-fire in 1967 gutted the old factory,

Following the fire, the Grand River Conservation Authority recognized the heritage significance of the mill. The building was reinforced and the remaining stone walls were stabilized.

The ruins are located inside the Rockwwod Conservation area.
