Die Zeche Zollverein in Essen war von 1851 bis 1986 eines der größten Steinkohlebergwerke im Ruhrgebiet. Nach ihrer Schließung wurde das Gelände zu einem Industriedenkmal und Kulturzentrum umgebaut und für die Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht. 2001 wurde es zum UNESCO-Welterbe erklärt.

Im Westen des Zechengeländes steht die Kokerei, eine riesige Industrianlage zur Verarbeitung der Kohle zu Koks und Gas. Das Gas wurde in diesem nahegelegenen Gasometer gelagert. Das große, runde Bauwerk besteht in der unteren Hälfte aus Beton und in der oberen aus Stahlträgern. Auffälligstes Element ist eine riesige analoge Füllstandsanzeige, die eine maximale Füllmenge von 20.000 cbm anzeigen kann.

Seit 2018 ist geplant, das Gasometer zu einer Eventlocation mit Sandboden im Innern umzubauen, bis jetzt (Stand 2022) ist dies aber noch nicht umgesetzt worden.
The Zeche Zollverein in Essen was one of the largest hard coal mines in the Ruhr area from 1851 to 1986. After its closure, the site was converted into an industrial monument and cultural center and opened to the public. In 2001 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In the western part of the colliery is the coking plant (German: Kokerei), a huge industrial plant for processing coal into coke and gas. The gas was stored in this nearby gasometer. The large, round structure consists of concrete in the lower half and steel girders in the upper half. The most striking element is a huge analog fill level indicator that can show a maximum fill level of 20,000 cbm.

Since 2018 it has been planned to convert the gasometer into an event location with a sandy floor inside, but this has not yet been implemented (as of 2022).
