In the first years of the Second World War, Canada's Lincoln and Welland Regiment used this Universal Carrier in its defence of Newfoundland. After the war, this particular carrier had an interesting non-military career. The following text is taken from a plaque on site.
This Universal Carrier was used by the 1st Bat. Lincoln and Welland Regt. of St. Catharines, Ont., in defence of St. John's, early in WWII. It was later used in the Logging Industry after sale by Crown Assets. It was purchased and donated to the Park by the following; Canadian Rangers, Capt. Nelson J. Sherren CD, Lt. Roy White, Sgt Gordon Mercer & RNR Maj. Si Thompson CD. The unit was rebuilt for static display by Metal World.
The following St. John's companies and organizations also contributed to this Artillery Park; The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 56, G.J. Cahill & Co. Ltd., New Valve Services & Consulting Inc., Russel Metals, Princess Auto, Newfoundland Service Alliance, James Steinhauer, Siemens Canada, City Tire and Murray's Landscape Services. Major Contributors were the City of St. John's, The Department of Veterans Affairs and Provincial Command, RCL. All who participated are gratefully thanked by the 166 Regiment RA Association.
