Auf dem Gelände des Industriedenkmals Zeche Zollverein in Essen steht die längste freistehende Rolltreppe Deutschlands. Sie ist auf einem Platz vor der sogenannten Kohlenwäsche installiert, einem alten Industriegebäude, in dem sich heute das Ruhr Museum zur lokalen Geschichte befindet. Im Gegensatz zu den meisten mehrstöckigen Museen ist der Eingang des Ruhr Museums in einem der obersten Stockwerke und die Besucher werden über acht Etagen nach unten geführt. Die Rolltreppe führt zum Foyer des Museums mit Eingang, Café und Museumsshop.

Die Installation besteht aus zwei Rolltreppen und einer Treppe dazwischen in einem freistehenden, modernen Glasquader. Die Farben sind orange und schwarz gehalten und sehen insbesondere bei Dunkelheit durch orangene Beleuchtung spektakulär aus.

Die Rolltreppen haben eine Länge von 58 Metern und überwinden eine Höhe von 24 Metern. Die Fahrtzeit beträgt 90 Sekunden, während der man durch die offene Glaskonstruktion einen herrlichen Ausblick auf das Zechengelände hat. Bis zum Bau der Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg war es die längste Rolltreppe Deutschlands und ist bis heute die längste freistehende Rolltreppe Deutschlands.

Die Rolltreppe kann auch ohne den Besuch ins Museum kostenlos besucht und genutzt werden.

The longest free-standing escalator in Germany is located on the site of the industrial monument Zeche Zollverein in Essen. It is installed on a plaza in front of the so-called coal washery, an old industrial building that now houses the Ruhr Museum on local history. Unlike most multi-storey museums, the Ruhr Museum's entrance is on one of the top floors and visitors are led down eight floors. The escalator leads to the museum foyer with entrance, café and museum shop.

The installation consists of two escalators and a staircase in between in a free-standing, modern glass block. The colors are orange and black and look spectacular, especially in the dark with orange lighting.

The escalators are 58 meters long and 24 meters high. The ride time is 90 seconds, during which you have a wonderful view of the colliery site through the open glass construction. Until the construction of the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, it was the longest escalator in Germany and is still the longest free-standing escalator in Germany.

The escalator can be visited and used free of charge without visiting the museum.
