In 2022, the U.S. Postal Service issued a set of ten stamps with the theme ‘The Mighty Mississippi.’ Each of the ten stamps shows a scene of the Mississippi River from each of the ten states that border the river. The Mississippi River stretches over 2300 miles from Minnesota in the north to Louisiana on the Gulf of Mexico.

The riverboat seen on the stamp is the ‘American Queen.’ Christened in 2012, it’s the largest riverboat ever built. It’s one of the vessels used by American Queen Voyages running excursions on the Mississippi River and some of its tributaries. It’s not always found at this location, in fact, it’s only here two or three times a year, so if you want to see it, you’d have to check its schedule.

Seen in the background of the stamp is a pair of suspension bridges known as the I-74 Mississippi River Bridge, the old one that is. It’s been replaced with a pair of new “basket handle” arch bridges which opened in 2021. The photo used for the stamp must have been taken before construction on the new bridges began in 2018. The old bridges are scheduled to be demolished, but, as of this writing, both sets of bridges are still standing.
