Wanneer men het St. Antonius Ziekenhuis in Leidsche Rijn door de hoofdingang binnenkomt, ontmoet men een bronzen sculptuur midden in de lange hal. Het beeld is een creatie van Groenekanner Martin Verholt. Hij was een patient van het ziekenhuis en hoorde dat het ziekenhuis kunstwerken wou aankopen. Daarom heeft hij in 2015 zelf een kunstwerk voor het ziekenhuis gemaakt en geschonken.

Voor de maker heeft het woord 'oer' een persoonlijke betekenis. Gedurende zijn jeugd woonde hij in Ulft, een plaats waar eeuwen geleden ijzerhoudende grond - oer dus - werd gedolven langs de Oude IJssel en bewerkt werd in de ijzergieterijen. Als je in zo'n omgeving en ook nog pal naast de DRU-fabrieken geboren en getogen bent, durf je best het begrip 'Oermoeder' te vertalen in een beeld.

Verholt: 'Leven vanuit de oerkracht, gestold in zwart, vloeibaar en onder druk van de dimensie van duur in de aarde, is doorgegeven naar leven op aarde. Wat we zien is een gestileerde, tere vrouwenfiguur, die opstijgt te midden van een beschuttend omhulsel. Een gezicht is niet nodig want het lichaam vertelt ons al genoeg: het mysterie van de schepping, de kracht van de opengescheurde aarde. Het lichaam van de vrouw is nog niet los van de aarde'. Martin beschouwt de vrouw als de schakel in de keten van het leven: 'De aarde geeft haar de startkracht, zij moet zelf in de ruimte en in de omgeving van de medemens haar eigen weg bepalen'.

When one enters the St. Antonius Hospital in Leidsche Rijn through the main entrance, one encounters a bronze sculpture in the middle of the long hall. The sculpture is a creation of Groenekanner Martin Verholt. He was a patient of the hospital and heard that the hospital wanted to purchase works of art. That is why he made and donated a work of art for the hospital in 2015.

For the maker, the word 'primal' has a personal meaning. During his childhood he lived in Ulft, a place where centuries ago ferrous soil - so primal - was mined along the Oude IJssel and worked in the iron foundries. If you were born and raised in such an environment and also right next to the DRU factories, you dare to translate the term 'Primal Mother' into an image.

Verholt: 'Life from the primal force, solidified in black, liquid and under pressure from the dimension of duration in the earth, has been passed on to life on earth. What we see is a stylized, delicate female figure, rising amid a protective shell. A face is not necessary because the body already tells us enough: the mystery of creation, the power of the torn open earth. The woman's body is not yet detached from the earth'. Martin sees women as the link in the chain of life: 'The earth gives her the starting power, she herself has to determine her own path in space and in the environment of her fellow human beings'.
