"The village of Irsch is located in an old side valley of the Saar. Finds from burial mounds testify to a very old settlement tradition. Many repaired and maintained wayside crosses and chapels can be found in the village itself and in the district. At the location of the chapel "Speiner Bildchen" the inhabitants of the Kalfertshaus, the only house on the heights of the district of Spein, hid in the hedges from the marauding soldiers during the War of Succession of Louis XV (1733-1738) and survived. Out of gratitude, they erected a wayside shrine in honor of Our Lady in 1734. To protect the wayside shrine the chapel Speiner Bildchen was built in 1838. On the old connecting road from the Hunsrück, this was the last rest stop before the descent into the Saar valley and the first rest stop on the way home. The tour combines a unique mixture of intact natural area and old cultural landscape with sunny vineyards and a smooth transition to the somewhat rougher landscape of the Hunsrück. The sparse coppice forests that emerged from traditional forest use are still preserved in large stands, especially on the valley slopes between Irsch and Ockfen."
