After Atlanta was chosen as the sight of the Centennial Olympic games in 1996, the Georgia Tech campus in Atlanta was chosen to house the Olympic Village. It was also decided to build a new aquatic center which would become part of Georgia Tech’s campus after the games. Designed by the local firm of Stanley Love-Stanley and funded by the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games, the new aquatic facility was originally an open-air venue with seating for over 4000. It has since been completely enclosed with most of the seating capacity removed.
During the 1996 summer games, the aquatic center not only hosted all swimming and diving events but also the synchronized swimming competition and the swimming portion of the pentathlon. In 2016, the facility was renamed in honor of Herb McAuley, Georgia Tech alumnus, collegiate swimming champion and swimming coach at Georgia Tech for over 40 years.
