This statue of Saint John Neumann is located at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, on the corner of 13th Street and 13th Avenue in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The statue is in a niche to the left of the main entrance to the Cathedral. It depicts Saint John dressed in the vestments of a bishop, holding a crozier. On the base of the statue it says, "St. John Neumann, Angel of the Immigrants."
Saint John Neumann was born in 1811 in Bohemia. Ordained a priest in 1836, he became a missionay priest in western New York. In 1842 he joined the Redemptorist Order and ministered in Baltimore and Pittsburgh. In 1852 he became the bishop of Philadelphia. He died in 1860 after founding many churches, schools, hospitals, and orphanages. He was canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1977.
