The eastern part of the bridge dates back to 1228, when the Archbishop of York, titular Lord of the Manor of Otley, had it built to provide a more direct route to York.

During 1775-6 the bridge was widened on the western side and then in 1957 congestion due to increased traffic volumes a concrete cantilevered pedestrian walkway was added to the western side.

A further increase of the volume of both pedestrian traffic and cyclists led to an announcement in 2001 that a project has been started to look at ways that the 1957 crossing can be improved especially as it is nearing the end of its working life.

The bridge is believed to be one of the oldest in the country and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
