Battleship Mutsu was built in 1921 at the Yokosuka Naval Arsenal.
At the time of its completion, it was counted among the "Big Seven Battleships of the World. It was the first in the world to be equipped with 16 inch guns.

Its main armament was four twin-gun turrets of 16 inch guns.
Mutsu was used as a flagship of the Combined Fleet of the Imperial Japanese Navy, but sank in 1943 off the coast of Hashirajima in the Seto Island Sea after an internal ammunition explosion.

In 1970, the gun was retrieved from the salvaged Mutsu, and was displayed at the Museum of Maritime Science in Tokyo since 1974.

Through the efforts of the Mutsu Volunteer Committee, the Museum of Maritime Sciene decided to give the gun to the City of Yokosuka. Fitting in with the 80th anniversary of the reconstruction of the Mutsu in Yokosuka, it was moved to this location in 2016, which was supported by the citizens of Yokosuka and many others.
