The Kitsap 9/11 Memorial, created by architect Dave Fergus, is located at the far eastern end of Evergreen Rotary Park, near the banks of the Port Washington Narrows in Bremerton, Washington. It features two twisted beams recovered from the ruins of the World Trade Center, a piece of limestone from the Pentagon, and sand from the field in Shanksville, PA, where United Flight 93 crashed. Concentric circles around the edge of the beams give a timeline of events, and a set of tiles created by local school children express through art what it means to them to be a hero.
The memorial is surrounded by 30 gingko trees to represent the 3000+ people who perished in the attacks. A single American flag rises above the monument to the east.
The Kitsap 9/11 Memorial was meant to be touched and interacted with, to help the observer to remember what happened on that particular day and never to forget the selfless acts of bravery committed by so many people, whether members of the military, police, fire and rescue, pilots, or ordinary citizens. Local VFW Post 239 voted to serve as the caretakers of these recovered beams "for eternity."
