The first Catholic mass in Winsted occurred in 1851. In that year land was purchased for the first Catholic church in Winsted. The cornerstone was laid in 1853. The construction of the current building occurred in 1914 and the building was completed in 1916. St. Joseph Roman Catholic is owned by the Franciscan friars of the Order of St. Francis, O.S.F. The Gothic Revival style building is constructed of stone blocks with a cross gable roof. A set of steps leads up to a triple entrance. Each entrance is identical and framed by a Gothic arch. Above the triple entrance is a huge highly complex multi-part stained glass window. Above the window is a statue of St. Francis set within an niche.

On the southeast corner is a tower which has a from bottom to top: a basement window, two lancet windows, a large window within a Gothic arch, a three small rectangular windows, and a belfry with three louvered windows. The tower is topped by a tapered octagonal spire with dormer windows at the base of each side. The spire is topped with a cross.

The west has an extension below the main block with a two level wing with a gable roof. The lower level has two lancet windows and the upper level has a single large window within a Gothic arch. Then a block with for large Gothic windows and a cross gable end with a large stained glass window. The main block has four smaller windows above the extension. The east side has the same arrangement of windows beyond the tower on the southeast corner.
