This statue of Saint Benedict is located in a garden to the north of Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church in the town of Patton, Pennsylvania. The statue depicts Saint Benedict holding a croizer, a book, and a cracked chalice, with a crow standing at his feet. The crozier is a symbol of his being an abbot. The book is a symbol of his Rule for monks. The cracked chalice and crow are symbols of times when monks tried to poison him. In one instance, when he blessed the chalice of poisoned wine, the chalice shattered. In the other instance, a crow helped him to get rid of poisoned bread.

Born in Italy in the 5th century, St. Benedict is considered the father of western monasticism. After living as a hermit for a time, he founded a monastery at Monte Cassino around the year 530. Many followers joined him at the monastery and he wrote his famous Rule, outlining the way of life for monks. He died in the 540s and his feast day was set on March 21st, until the revision of the Roman calendar when it was moved to July 11th.
