According to Sioux legend, Maiden Rock got its name when the daughter of chief Red Wing jumped from this cliff because her lover, a member of the rival Chippawa tribe, was killed by order of Red Wing himself. The 400-ft. high cliff which provides stunning views of the Mississippi River and the Great River Road, was designated a Wisconsin State Natural Area in 2004.
Getting to this spot requires a hike of about a mile (one way) through fields of wildflowers. When I visited in late summer there were a lot of thistles and goldenrod. The trailhead is located at the end of Long Lane off county road E near Stockholm, Wisconsin.
