Le Knebworth était un vapeur charbonnier en provenance du port de Hythe en Angleterre, il transportait 1400 tonnes de charbon. Le 27 janvier 1930, dans l'attente de la marée haute pour rentrer au port de Bayonne, il mouillait au large du phare de Biarritz. Une violente rafale de vent l'entraîna sur le rocher de la Frégate sur lequel il s'est brisé en deux.
Un câble va et vient fut mis en place pour tenter d'évacuer les naufragés. Après un premier essai infructueux, cent volontaires tirèrent sur la corde pour rétablir la liaison avec le bateau. Huit hommes furent ainsi hissés sur la terre ferme dans des conditions très difficiles. Du ravitaillement fut envoyé sur l'épave pour permettre aux sept autres marins de s'alimenter et s'éclairer.
A 21H30 un signal morse indiquait: "Avons assez de vivres, sommes très fatigués, pouvons plus haler les câbles, souhaitons dormir tranquilles, à demain"... La tempête s'étant calmée, le sauvetage était suspendu jusqu'au lendemain. Toute la nuit le bateau fut éclairé depuis l'ancien Miramar au moyen d'une dynamo.
Le lendemain à 6H15, "La Marthotte" de Saint-Jean-de-Luz, piloté par les biarrots Félix Lassalle et Ernest Henri (dit "Pinthayre"), accosta l'épave et sauva les hommes qui restaient à bord. Seul, le matelot Glendiming, originaire de Newcastle, a péri dans le drame en essayant de rejoindre la côte avec une bouée lumineuse. Les quinze rescapés furent hébergés et soignés à l'Hôtel d'Angleterre à Saint-Jean-de-Luz.
L'épave fut démolie par les flots à la fin de l'année 1930, laissant émerger des tôles d'acier à marée basse durant de longues années.

The next day at 6:15 a.m., "La Marthotte" from Saint-Jean-de-Luz, piloted by the Biarrots Félix Lassalle and Ernest Henri (known as "Pinthayre"), accosted the wreck and saved the men who remained on board. Only the sailor Glendiming, originally from Newcastle, perished in the tragedy while trying to reach the coast with a light buoy. The fifteen survivors were housed and cared for at the Hotel d'Angleterre in Saint-Jean-de-Luz.
