The first congregational church in New Hartford was built on Town Hill in 1749. A the building of water powered mills shifted the population to the Farmington River Valley, 60 members left the Town Hill Church and built the North Congregational Church in 1828. The North Ecclesiastical Society of New Hartford was incorporated on November 18, 1828 and the North Congregational Church was dedicated on December 25, 1828.
The brick Greek Revival North Congregational Church has a projecting entrance block that is three bays wide. Each bay has an entrance framed by a rounded arch and topped by a fan window. Above the entrances are windows with brownstone sills and rounded tops.
The front of the main block has a tall multi-pane windows with a rounded top flanking the entrance block. The south side of the church is four bays wide with tall windows with rounded tops at each bay. The north side has three tall windows with rounded tops. The fourth bay is connected to an addition added in 1960.
Rising from the gable roof of the main block and the pediment of the entrance block is a three tiered steeple. The lower tier is a short square tower which is separated a larger tower above by a cornice. The larger tower has boarded up windows. At the top of the steeple is an octagonal belfry with alternating louvered windows and topped by a dome with a weather vane.
