"War against Austria
To deprive Venice of the Empire of Austria, Italy made an agreement with Prussia in 1866 and took part in the Prussian-Austrian War. Italy suffered defeats at the Battle of Custoza and the naval battle at Lissa, but Prussia defeated Austria in Bohemia.

In October 1866 the Treaty of Vienna was signed. As a result of this treaty, Austria ceded the territory of Venice (Veneto) to Italy. South Tyrol and Istria remained Austrian. Irredent circles in Italy, however, continued to claim those two areas. After the conquest of Venice, however, the Italians first turned their eyes to the Papal States."
