The Ecclesiastical Society of Winsted was formed in 1777 and held their first meeting on March 17, 1778. Their first congregational church was erected in 1793. As the population shifted to the Still River Valley a new church was build on the East End Green in 1800. In August of 1900 the cornerstone was laid for the First Congregational Church. The church was dedicated on September 19, 1901. In 1949, the First Congregational Church merged with the First Baptist Church to form the present First Church of Winsted.

The massive Gothic Revival style First Church of Winsted is constructed of locally quarried granite blocks. The main entrance is located on the southwest corner of the building. A set of steps leads up to pair of blue doors is framed by Gothic arched and separated by a Corinthian column. Above the doors is a stained glass window in a framed by a Gothic arch and protruding from a conical roof. On either side of the stained glass window are two non protruding windows with pointed tops.

Adjacent to the double entrance is a third entrance at the base of an eight sided tower. The tower has Gothic lancet windows and a belfry with pointed louvered windows below the crenellated roof.

To the north is a rounded section with to large stained glass windows on the lower level and a set of eight smaller windows on the upper level. Next a narrow section has stairs leading up to a fourth entrance. Above is a circular window and a stepped roof-line. The last section on the northeast end has a triple window flanked by single windows on the lower level and an upper level series of rectangular windows that wraps around the to the Holabird Avenue side of the building below the roof-line.
