Downtown YMCA - Erie, PA - Historic Preservation Awards on Waymarking.com

The Downtown YMCA is located on the corner of West 10th and Peach Streets in Erie, Pennsylvania. The YMCA of Greater Erie was founded in 1860 and the downtown YMCA building was constructed in 1910. A stone plaque on the side of the building states, "This building erected by the people of Erie to the glory of God the honor of Jesus Christ and for the welfare of men."

In 2014, the Downtown YMCA received a "Greater Erie Award" from Preservation Erie, an organization created "to promote, preserve, and enhance the distinctive character of greater Erie through community-based planning, design, and historic preservation." According to the Preservation Erie website, "The Greater Erie Awards are presented annually by the board of Preservation Erie to individuals, businesses or organizations that are exceptional stewards of the physical and cultural landscape that is Greater Erie." They awarded a 2014 Greater Erie Award to the Downtown YMCA, "In recognition of the YMCA’s century and a half of dedication nurturing the health of Erie residents and in honor of a sustained commitment to the stewardship of one of the City’s great structures – the historic YMCA building at Peach and West 10th Streets."
