This unique work of High and Late Gothic architecture, founded in 1388, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the historic city centre. According to historical sources, the magnificent structure was twice the length of today's building.

The five-aisle Gothic cathedral was founded as a miners' church, as evidenced by its dedication to St. Barbara, the patron saint of miners. The building was not completed until the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The temple was intended to represent the power and importance of the mining town, which began to take shape in the 1370s by joining mining settlements on the site of a rich silver ore deposit. The interior preserves a unique gallery of late Gothic and Renaissance paintings from the 15th century.

St. Barbara's Cathedral was built on the model of French cathedrals. The patricians of Kutná Hora tried to surpass the Cistercian monastery in Sedlec in size and ornamentation. That is why such important cathedral buildings of the cathedral type were built not far from each other. Originally, the church was to be three-aisled and more elongated. Very soon, however, it was changed into a five-nave one. Such masters as Petr Parlér, Matyáš Rejsek and Benedikt Rejt also participated in the construction of the temple.

In the creation of old Kutná Hora collages, not only the images of all four seasons, but also different times of the day were used. On this postcard by A. Spevák, the maker has chosen a combination of St. Barbara's church with summer night and the moon. All this was then framed by an interesting Art Nouveau frame.

Unfortunately, the view of the south side of the cathedral is now largely obscured by trees.
