The site of the Monterey Bay Aquarium was the site of the Portola Cannery, which canned sardines. The sign says: "This machine sealed the cans shit after the sardines had been pre-cooked and squired with sauce (tomato, mustard or seasoned oil) The big cylinder lifted each can into the "head" where small rollers crimped the lids onto the cans."

The canneries expanded during WWI in the 1910. It's unknown when the machines were put on display.
