Golf has been played in the Fife town of Burntisland on the Firth of Forth opposite Edinburgh since 1797 and perhaps even earlier. The club formed in the town is the 10th oldest in the world, and a course was surveyed by Old Tom Morris and designed by Willie Park Jnr in 1897 on land at Dodhead lying above the town to the east. The official opening was on May 1st 1898.
James Braid made some alterations in 1922 and the course remains as it was then. The course climbs uphill from the first hole and heads eastwards for the first three, before heading south towards the undulating heathland that comes into play over most of the holes around the turn, with views across the Firth of Forth to Edinburgh. There are three short holes in the first six and only one more thereafter at the 17th. The second hole is the only par five, with the 12th with its tee shot over and old overgrown quarry the longest par four. Other notable holes are the downhill short 5th, the tee shot down the hill from the courses highest point at the 9th tee, and the blind short par four 10th with is walled-in green at the foot of the hill at the south-east corner of the course. The final hole heads west back downhill to the clubhouse.
