Soldiers Memorial Gate stands on the west side of Thayer Street at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. It spans the footpath separating Metcalf Research Building and Caswell Hall at the midpoint between Waterman and George Streets. Quotes from Ralph Waldo Emerson and Winifred Letts poems are featured on the east face of the structure.
Inscribed at the left side is a line from Ralph Waldo Emerson’s poem "Sacrifice":
‘Tis man’s perdition to be safe
When for the truth he ought to die.
Carved into the right side is a line from the Winifred Letts poem "The Spires of Oxford":
They gave their merry youth away
For country and for God.
Soldiers Memorial Gate was dedicated on April 6, 1921, and recognizes the 42 men of Brown (41 students and alumni and one faculty member) who lost their lives in the War and whose names are inscribed on the gate. Charles A. Coolidge of Boston, Massachusetts, designed the monumental stone arch.
