Catholics in New Hartford held their first mass in 1849 in various private buildings. As Irish and French–Canadians immigrants came to work in local cotton mills the Catholic population grew and the it became imperative to build a church.
The Immaculate Conception Church was designed by architect Patrick C. Keely in the Gothic Revival style. It was completed in 1870 and dedicated on March 27, 1870. Immaculate Conception became a parish in 1881. The Immaculate Conception Church was merged with Immaculate Heart of Mary Church of Harwinton to form Our Lady of Hope Parish.
A long set of steps leads up to the blue, double door entrance of the Immaculate Conception Church. The entrance is framed by a Gothic arch. and a gable. Above the entrance is a large circular stained glass window and a triple set of Gothic lancet windows with the taller of the three in the middle.
On each side of the church, below the gable roof, are slanted roofs which cover a section with a three part Gothic window on the front. The northwest side has a projecting raised entrance beneath a gable roof. Beyond the entrance and the tower are seven pairs of Gothic stained glass windows.
An entrance at the base of a tower on the northeast corner matched the main entrance of the church. Above is a belfry with Gothic style louvered windows. A hexagonal spire with a cross on top rises from a truncated pyramidal roof.
