La ville a été longtemps, avec Graulhet, l’un des centres français de la pelleterie, particulièrement du parchemin, et ceci depuis le Moyen-Âge. Levroux a donné son nom à un fromage de forme pyramidale tronquée, de 7 à 8 cm de côté à la base et de 4 cm de côté au sommet, de 6 cm d’épaisseur, d’un poids de 250 à 300 g. Cette forme particulière est le résultat d’une trouvaille d’une paysanne de la fin du XIX° siècle, qui faute de moule à fromage utilisa un moule à gâteau. Lorsqu’elle alla au marché, elle s’aperçut que les fromages en forme de pyramide eurent un plus grand succès que ses fromages habituels.

La Fontaine est sous le vocable de Sainte-Rodène. Saint-Martin christianisa une fontaine vouée à une divinité des eaux jaillissantes : il garda Rodène mais lui conféra une nouvelle identité qu’elle conserve de nos jours.

Une légende rapporte qu’une bergère des environs de Levroux nommée Rodène ou Rose conduisait son troupeau vers la fontaine proche de la chapelle saint Sylvain afin de se désaltérer à la source de la vérité. Elle mourut dans la sainteté. Depuis la fontaine Saint-Sylvain prit le nom de Sainte-Rodène ou Sainte-Rose. Une autre légende raconte que : Rodène quitta son fiancé Corusculus pour suivre Saint Sylvain et Saint Sylvestre à Gabatum. Elle se convertit au christianisme et se mutila le visage pour échapper à son fiancé. Saint Sylvain guérit ses blessures et lui rendit sa beauté. Autrefois, les pèlerins venaient à Levroux pour prier Sainte Rodène. La Sainte est évoquée traditionnellement pour la guérison des maux de tête.

C’est dans le mois des roses que l’on venait à cette fontaine en pèlerinage, pour y puiser les uns la guérison de leurs maux, mais pour d’autres la consolation de leurs peines.
