The town of Ellon is situated in Aberdeenshire in the far north-east of Scotland, 16 miles north of the city of Aberdeen. In 1926, benefactor Sir James McDonald gifted woodland north-west of the town centre to the townsfolk, and nine holes were built, consisting of a par 33 with three par threes.
Eventually a further nine holes were built over the other side of Hospital Road to the north and west, this would become the first nine (Co-ordinates are from the first tee).
The course undulates through the woodland with the trees on the newer nine now fully matured. The new front nine is nearly 800 yards longer than the older back nine with both par fives here, and only one short hole, making a par of 70. The first tee is reached from the clubhouse by crossing Hospital Road via a zebra crossing, this part of the course being hidden from view by housing. The old back nine features taller older trees, with the final two holes being the longest par fours.
