The building is an example of the florid High Victorian grand Town Hall in the French/Renaissance/Italianate architectural style with a central clock tower.
On 24 August 1887 Sir Henry Parkes G.C.M.G. laid the foundation stone, the hall was officially opened on 9 November 1888.
